Our garden has a number of upright poles which we use to support bird feeders during the winter. Thin enough that squirrels can’t scramble up them, they really don’t have enough substance to them to support flower baskets.They should, however, have no problem supporting the two solar powered lanterns which make up this set. Most of the accent pieces in our garden feature bronze or brass in one manner or another; these two lanterns fit in perfectly! Each lantern consists of two components, the wire frame of the device and a pop-in LED lighting unit with a solar panel on its top surface.The frame of the lamp is designed to be light enough to be supported by the clip which is attached to the unit’s handle. It is essentially a bronze coloured wire framework; there is no top plate (the lighting unit slips into the opening) nor is there a bottom plate (which prevents water from collecting). It does its job nicely and is, indeed, surprisingly light. The alligator clip which can be used to hang the light is sturdy enough for the job although I would recommend using the handle if the unit is placed in a windy location to reduce the chance of it giving way. The LED light has an on/off switch which sits near the base of the bulb; it will likely only be used when putting the lamp into storage for the winter season. The bulb is relatively large, very similar to those used in patio string lights. It casts just enough light that you can walk in the dark (carefully) when carrying it.I can’t really comment on how the lamp will perform in the reduced light of autumn but right now, with the summer sun shining brightly, the unit stays lit from dusk until dawn. The product page indicates that six to eight hours of light is required for a charge which will provide ten to twelve hours of light.We have found the fit of the lighting unit into the metal framework to be very tight and challenging to get in. Once installed, I would recommend leaving it in place permanently; the on/off switch can easily be reached through the wire framework.These lights function as advertised, providing accent lighting for a garden or patio for most of, if not all, of the night. Attractive (although not particularly large), their lightweight construction allows them to hang (or sit) in a wide variety of locations. At their current price of $40 CAD for the pair, the units are competitively priced. Recommended.
